The Achilles UVDB Audit

Tom, Luke and Reece of GEOTEC Surveys Ltd met with the Achilles Auditor on the morning of 24th July 2025 onsite in Ockford Ridge in Godalming, where we were supporting Waverley Borough Council in carrying out an Underground Mapping Survey for buried services and utilities as part of a large regeneration project.

The auditor met with the survey team of Luke and Reece who demonstrating the survey requirements and specification.

The team also showcased their Health & Safety documentation and briefing methodology which included a review of their Project Sheet, RAMS, COSHH Assessment and equipment calibration certification as well as training certificates and first aid kits.

The survey team also had their Project Folder downloaded onto their phones which was emailed to them before the survey and the lead surveyor completed their own briefing & site walkover before the survey began.

The Auditor assessed our Onsite Activities in comparison with our office based management system, which covered Health & Safety, Environment & Quality, before returning to our Head Office to complete the audit process.

Achilles are the body who evaluate suitable suppliers, on behalf of their buying community, made up of 69 buyers comprising energy, water and utility companies.

UVDB stands for the Utilities Vendor Data Base, which buyers use to identify the most appropriate supply chain partners for their projects.

To allow GEOTEC Surveys onto the UVDB database, GEOTEC need to meet a number of standards, both through the online supplier portal (UVDB) and the Verify Audit.

The online portal covers the following topics, which GEOTEC must comply with certain standards, to meet:

  • Health & Safety
  • Quality
  • Environmental
  • Ethical Business
  • Business Continuity
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Financial Stability & Ownership
  • Carbon Management
  • Data Governance and Cyber Security
  • Sustainability

The Verify Audit is an annual audit which is carried out by an external Achilles UVDB Auditor to confirm the information set out within the online UVDB supplier portal.

This consists of Health and Safety, Environmental, Quality and Sustainability aspects and comprises and office-based assessment of our management systems and an onsite evaluation to ensure that the management system evidence mirrors what actually happens onsite.

This accreditation is important as it is the only supplier database that the major energy and utility companies use; they comprise 69 buyers, including National Grid, National Grid Gas, SSE, UK Power Networks (UKPN), Cadent Gas, Thames Water, Portsmouth Water, SGN, and Northern Ireland Electricity Ltd.

In addition, it underlines, to the Energy and Utility Sector as well as all of our current and potential customers, our dedication to continuous improvement and demonstrates GEOTEC’s approach to meeting the highest possible standards, which is reflected in the survey work that we deliver to our clients.

It allows GEOTEC to work for those buyers operating within the Energy and Utility Sector and on sites such as:

  • Power Stations
  • National Substations
  • Distribution Substations
  • Water Treatment Sites
  • Sewage Treatment Sites
  • Clean Water Sites
  • Pipeline Installation Projects
  • Cable Installation Projects
  • Solar Farms
  • Gas Terminals
  • CHP Sites
  • Oil Refineries
  • Pylon Run Projects

Our surveyors also hold industry specific training certification to work on these sites including Water Safety Passports, EUSR (the Register of training and skills for the utilities sector) and other customer specific training and accreditation.

GEOTEC need to maintain our supplier portal on the database and update accordingly throughout the year, as well as keep our management system processes up to date to ensure that we continue to maintain the standards set out as part of the qualification and audit processes.
